About

"Every human has a true authentic self. Trauma is the disconnection from the authentic self and healing is the reconnection back to it." -Gabor Mate

My name is Umeko (pronounced: you-may-co) Allen (She/Hers) and I am a Licensed Marriage & Family Therapist (MFT# 88564) based out of Soultenders’ Cerritos location (currently providing telehealth sessions only at this time). I graduated from California State University, Long Beach in 2010 with my Bachelor’s in Studio Art and Minor in Psychology and then in 2012 with my Master’s in Counseling. Additionally, I have extensive hours of study and training in yoga and yoga therapy. I have a background in community mental health in which I provided service to at-risk, marginalized children, adolescents and their families for 6 years. Currently, I primarily serve adult individuals (18+) and couples.

I am passionate about helping people from all walks of life heal through life’s challenges and I especially love to support fellow BIPoC individuals who have been largely underserved by the mental health field. As your therapist, I am committed to cultivating a healing environment to compassionately support you in being able to align with your true values and learn to be in authentic relationship with yourself, your loved ones, and within your community.

Together, we will take a healing journey towards a path of a more meaningful and fulfilling life. A life where you will be able to set boundaries and know how to have your needs met. A life that will feel lighter and help you feel more at ease with others and with yourself. A life wherein it’s comfortable to truly be who you are. My approach is person-centered, which involves getting to understand you and your world and collaborating with you to generate solutions tailored to meet your unique needs.

I work through a trauma-informed, holistic, decolonized, social justice oriented lens, which helps shine a light on and address the underlying, root cause issues that are blocking you from being able to thrive in your life. I emphasize the interconnectedness between mind-body-spirit and integrate approaches like EMDR, mindfulness and other somatic based practices with more traditional cognitive based modalities like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Psychodynamic Therapy, Existential Therapy, Narrative Therapy, etc to encourage the embodied healing of you as a whole.

Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, panic, depression, trauma, grief, low self-esteem, anger/impulse control, stress/burnout, relationship issues/codependency or anything that is making you feel lost or stuck in your life, know that you don’t have to shoulder these burdens alone. If you’re motivated for change, I’m ready to help you challenge your limiting beliefs, heal old/new internal wounds, expand your relational skills, and take the aligned actions that will give you the chance at the authentic life you deserve. Looking forward to working with you!
